What is a PRAM battery?
Older desktop Macintoshes
have a battery on the motherboard to keep the clock and the control
panel settings (the Parameter RAM) alive. These batteries last between
3 and 6 years, depending on how the machine is used.
If your Mac loses the clock time and date,
the Chooser printer settings, or the Network settings whenever you turn
it off, chances are you need a new battery. Other symptoms are the startup
chime sounding, but the monitor remaining dark or gray with no desktop
(of course, double-check your cables and peripherals first).
Most Macintosh machines should have their batteries
replaced every three to five years as a matter of course.
For Mac SE/30, Classic series, Mac II series
(Mac IIfx requires 2), Centris and Quadra series, LC and Performa series
up to 575, eMac G4, PowerMac 6100/7100/8100 series, PowerMac G3,G4 and G5 and most G3 and G4
The size of a double
A battery but only half as long, you'll find it in a small black
plastic "cage" on
the motherboard of the machine. Use a flat screwdriver to gently
outwards on the clips at the ends of the cage, and the top part
of the cage will come off easily.
NOTE WHICH WAY THE POSITIVE TERMINAL IS
ORIENTED BEFORE REMOVING THE OLD BATTERY! You must install
the new battery
in the same direction.
The Parameter RAM must have a chance
to fully discharge. Give your Mac five minutes or so with no battery
before you install
the new one. If your machine does not boot after installing
new battery, remove and leave it batteryless for 12 hours,
then reinstall and try again.
For LC and Performa 580 and up, PowerMac
and Performa 5200 and up except 6100/7100/8100,
Motorola StarMax. This is a black, roughly cube-shaped plastic
with Velcro on one side to stick it down, and a 2-wire lead
to plug into a jumper on the motherboard.Replacement is straightforward.
Notebook Macs use a variety of different PRAM batteries, so please inquire (some used no PRAM battery, relying on the main battery and a small capacitor to hold charge for a couple of minutes for main battery change)
