General Principles and Recommendations
When the Client’s machine or data is brought to us, it is helpful to provide as much specific information as possible about what the problem is, what if any error messages there were and what they said (write it down word for word if you can), what events preceded the problem (such as, installing new software, upgrading an OS, using a particular program, attaching a peripheral, noises, etc), and/or describing what the desired service outcome is.
The Client is responsible for keeping all of their own passwords, serial numbers and security measures secure and confidential. Account logons and passwords, plus installation media with legal serials / activation keys must be provided by the Client. The Consultant will not provide, crack, recover or circumvent commercial software serial numbers, activation keys or user passwords.
The Client is responsible for maintaining backups of critical data (the Consultant can review and recommend procedures). It is highly recommended that the Client back up all important data before having service or upgrades done. If data has not been backed up, the Client can request that the Consultant make best efforts to back up the data prior to starting; this takes time and will result in hourly charges.
We recommend that Client also maintain organized files of the software and hardware licenses, media and warranties, documentation, training information and support documentation. The Consultant will not record, or remember, the Client serials or logins.
The nature of computing environments is that hardware and software failures will happen unpredictably, and human error will happen. The Consultant commits to making best efforts to prevent or mitigate data loss, expense and time delay, but cannot guarantee that the computing environment will be trouble free and that data will not be lost. In particular, the Consultant cannot be responsible for the preservation or recovery of data from machines or storage devices under repair. See “Terms - Limitation of Liability” for details.
Work is undertaken as hourly, as-needed work, not a fixed-price / fixed-deliverables contract. The nature of the computing environment is that issues are not predictable, and services are offered on a fee per hour basis. The Consultant will endeavor to make estimates of the time required before work is undertaken, but these are estimates only and are not a guarantee of fixed cost or time. The Client can set a budget cap, and request a call for authorization to proceed if the work is going to exceed the cap.
The Consultant will at all times keep the information belonging to the Client private and confidential.
Payment in full is required before the machinery is returned. In some cases, at the Consultant’s discretion, partial or full payment may be required before work starts.
